Inside The Circle: Busa Writers' Community
The Babcock University Students’ Association Writers Community (BWC) was established to create a home for students passionate about storytelling, poetry, and other forms of literary expression. Since then, it has grown into a vibrant network of over 200 active writers, providing an environment where creativity is nurtured.
We sat with the excos of the community - to understand the shared vision that carries these pacesetting and creatively impactful group of students.
Why BWC?
Writing is a way to express emotions the tongue cannot conceive. At BWC, readers and writers are shaped to be the best versions of themselves. In a community where there is space for growth, constructive criticism, and camaraderie, writers and readers are able to push themselves beyond the limits set by society and their mind.
What is your vision?
To create confident writers who believe they can produce the best works, no matter the place or circumstance, and connect with their audience without inhibitions. We have created a platform where students can share their works without fear, and have taken them far beyond Babcock to the world at large through collaborations with platforms such as the TwoCents, among others. Students have been able to come out of the oyster of stage fright and present their works on stages.
What do you believe is your edge?
Our edge is that we’ve created a hub and safe space for writers; a community where people can freely share, discuss, and explore ideas across different genres without judgment. We have helped students start and finish and have helped writers move past self doubt, writer’s block, and fear of sharing their work. Through community, feedback, and exposure, students have gained confidence in their writing, discovered their unique voice, and learned that their words can move people, not just fill pages.
What is BWC cooking for us, the students?
This semester, BWC is serving spaces where writers can perform and learn. From open mics that give courage, to workshops that sharpen craft, and publications that give your words a life beyond your notes app. And somewhere between the writing and the rewriting, we’re creating moments for writers to breathe, connect, and unwind together because creativity thrives not just in pressure, but in the pause too.
What do you believe your presence on the university campus has helped students achieve?
We think there are a lot of beautiful writers on our campus. Babcock is really blessed with some of the most talented students. But talent is one thing, and nurturing it is another. We believe no man is an island as even God said it isn’t good for us to be alone. We all have different ideas and varying perspectives on life. We need communities like this to learn with each other and grow together. It’s not real success if only an individual wins. It’s a success when we all win.
What should readers expect from you as the semester rolls out?
As the semester rolls out, readers can expect an even more engaging and intentional writers' community with consistent discussions, creative activities, and opportunities for writers to connect and grow. We’ll be creating a space that not only inspires people to write, but also makes them feel seen, supported, and part of something meaningful.
This semester, BWC is bringing bigger, better, and bolder events. Be prepared.
